Armed Teacher Resolution
Last night the subject of arming teachers came up once again at the District 203 school board meeting. The group was presented with the Illinois Association of School Board’s 2019 resolution proposals, one of which included the student safety resolution, which would allow school employees the option of carrying a legal, concealed firearm. The board and a few community members spoke about not supporting the resolution – the same stance the board took last year. They’ll draft a statement explaining their opposition to the resolution, which will then be presented at the IASB Delegate Assembly happening later this year.
New D204 Courses
At last night’s District 204 board meeting school officials presented seven potential courses for the 2020-2021 school year. Business certifications, cyber security, Project Lead The Way – Aerospace, music production, athletic training, botany, and American sign language 4 were all pitched to board members. The new classes were presented to match the needs of the ever-changing work landscape. The board will make their decision on which courses to add at the next board meeting on October 21.
YMCA Executive Director Leaves
R.J. Bartels has stepped down from his position as Executive Director of the Kroehler and Fry YMCAs in Naperville, where he’s worked for 25 years. Bartels started his Y career as a program director and moved up through the organization. His last day at the YMCA was October 3rd.
Glass Pumpkin Patch at Arboretum
And for those of you looking for a unique way to celebrate autumn’s arrival, the Morton Arboretum’s Glass Pumpkin Patch begins tomorrow. More than 6,000 glassblown pumpkins of every style will be on display and available for purchase through October 13. The exhibit will also include live demonstrations on how the pumpkins were created by professional artists, held periodically throughout the day.
