Car Thefts and Burglaries:
After three car thefts and eight car burglaries over a six-day period, the Naperville Police Department is reminding residents to lock up, and take your keys. The incidents took place in the Maplebrook subdivision, northwest of 75th and Washington streets, between October 9 and October 14. All the vehicles had been left unlocked, and those stolen had the keys left inside. Police encourage residents to adopt a 9 p.m. lock-up routine, checking that their cars and homes are secure.
Standard Market Lawsuit:
Standard Market is facing a class action lawsuit, filed by a former employee. The Naperville Sun reports the company is being accused of illegally collecting, using and storing employee’s biometric data, including fingerprints. The fingerprints were used to track hourly employees in and out times. The suit was filed by Leen Abusalem on behalf of herself and any other employees affected. It asks for $1,000 for each violation, and the cessation of the illegal practices. An amendment to the lawsuit also claims proper notice was not given to employees prior to being laid off. The Naperville branch of Standard Market closed on March 30, but the Westmont location is still operating. Standard Market has not commented on the lawsuit.
New Additions to Naper Settlement:
Naper Settlement and the Naperville Heritage Society got a nod of approval for two new features on the museum’s campus. Naperville City Council unanimously said they plan to help fund the settlement’s Innovation Gateway and Agricultural Center via a SECA grant. The gateway will be a celebration of Naperville’s entrepreneurial spirit and even allow residents to upload their own stories of the town. The Agricultural Center will highlight Naperville’s history as a farming community. City staff said this won’t appear on a city budget until at least 2021 and suggested taking on debt to help fund it, so as not to take away from other SECA projects. The settlement hopes to start construction by 2022.
NAHS Expansion:
The Naperville Area Humane Society is one step closer to starting construction on its expansion. Last night the Planning and Zoning Commission approved variances to reduce the required building and parking setbacks on the property. This will allow the humane society to push their current building out to build a 4,600 square-foot addition that will include a lobby, more kennel space, and a community room. The commission’s vote now goes to city council for final approval.
Area Golfers Head to State:
Best of luck to our local golfers heading down to state tomorrow. On the girls’ side in class 2A, Naperville Central seniors Neha Vinesh and Emma Lim will make the trip along with Neuqua Valley sophomore Sarah Zheng. Naperville North will compete for the team title after winning the sectional championship. The Benet boys are also heading downstate as a team in class 2A after finishing as the sectional runner up. In class 3A, Will Troy and Jacob Fritz from Waubonsie Valley, Arjun Vyas from Metea Valley, Alec Cross from Neuqua Valley and Parker Mullen from Naperville North all qualified as individuals.
