Chirico Recusal on Central Park Place Vote:

At last night’s Naperville City Council meeting, Mayor Steve Chirico recused himself from discussion and voting on an item concerning Central Park Place, the new condo development on the old Nichols Library site. This came after a story by CBS Chicago claimed his business, Great Western Flooring, had a financial tie to the development. Chirico said last night that Great Western Flooring did not submit a bid on the project, but was approached by one of Central Park Place’s clients to provide an estimate for a specialty product not available with Empire Today, who is doing the floors for the rest of the building. Dwight Avram, the property owner, confirmed Chirico’s story and said he’s never done business with Great Western Flooring. Chirico called the story a political attack before recusing himself. Once he left the room, council had a broader discussion about what constitutes a conflict of interest, and directed city staff to draw up some clearer terms on the subject. The vote, which was to approve the Central Park Place development, then proceeded, passing 8-0.
