Little Friends Rezoning Decision Delayed:
The decision on whether to rezone the four-acre site owned by Little Friends, but planned to be purchased by North Central College has been delayed. At this week’s Naperville City Council meeting, the college asked to rezone the land bounded by School Street, Wright Street, Columbia Street and Franklin Avenue to college/university use. But some neighbors of the property voiced concerns about the lack of current plans in place for what will be built there. The college argues without the rezoning in place first, it’s hard for them to invest time and resources in creating a plan, and finalizing the purchase. Another complication is the historic Peter Kroehler house on the property, which preservationists would like to remain, but the college would like to remove. Council tabled the issue for now, and will discuss it again at their June 18 meeting.
Service Station Demo Approved:
Last night the Planning and Zoning Commission approved the demolition of the automobile service station on the corner of East Ogden Avenue and Royal Saint George. This will allow the petitioner, Vequity, LLC, to construct a new 7/11 service station in its place. While some neighbors of the area were concerned about the 24-hour convenience store, city staff agreed the new business will cause less disruption than the existing station and auto body shop. The new build will include 12 gas pumps and add a better landscaping buffer to conform to the surrounding neighborhood. The positive vote from the commission now goes to city council.
Diversity Discussion:
Community members gathered at City Hall for the third diversity discussion, organized by Naperville Neighbors United. Rosa Campos and Nancy Chen shared their stories about living in Naperville as minorities. After a question and answer session, community members split into small groups to learn about other cultures, and discuss hardships they’ve endured.
Metea Alum Heads To MLB:
The three-day, forty round Major League Baseball draft concluded yesterday and it was a memorable occasion for Metea Valley alum Ashton Creal. The 2017 grad was selected in the 21st round by the Cincinnati Reds. Creal played the past two seasons at John A. Logan Junior College, where he earned all-region honors in centerfield this year.
