Naperville couple pushing for mandated radon testing in Illinois schools
Naperville residents Dave Masa and his wife Vickie are on a mission to change state law to protect school children across Illinois.
Their goal is to ensure that the state’s 2 million public school students and staff are safe from elevated levels of radon, a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas known to cause cancer.

IPSD’s Justin Karubas resigning after 13 years of ‘collaborative spirit’
A longtime voice and district alum is stepping down from the Indian Prairie School District board of education at the end of this month.
Thirteen-year school board member Justin Karubas plans to submit his resignation May 24 in order to make a natural transition after the graduation of his youngest child and to take care of his health.

Endeavor Health accepting applications for CIF awards
Endeavor Health is currently accepting applications for its 2027 Community Investment Fund Impact Award.
The award gives $1 million a year for five years to support an innovative initiative that provides a long-term positive impact, unites two or more community-based organizations in a strategic partnership, aids vulnerable community members, and mirrors CIF goals. Loaves & Fishes Community Services was the inaugural recipient in 2026.
The CIF is also taking applications for its Capacity Builder Awards, which grant funds to projects of one or two years that build skills, infrastructure, and resources of community-based organizations. Those awards range in amount from $100,000 to $500,000 per year for up to two years.
Impact Award applications will be accepted through May 29, and Capacity Builder Award applications will be accepted from July 27 through August 21.
Applicants sought for Naperville Police Department Youth Academy
The Naperville Police Department is inviting area teens to apply to its free six-week summer Youth Academy. It will run on Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the NPD from June 11 through July 23, with a break on July 2.
The program is designed to give students a better understanding of police work through classes, discussions, and hands-on demonstrations on several topics, including investigations, forensics, police canines, and patrol operations.
Those applying must be a current or incoming high school student for 2026, and either be a Naperville resident or attend high school in Naperville. They must be in good standing and have parental permission. Applications are available online to download and print, and should be submitted by June 4. Acceptance to the program is on a first-come, first-served basis.
