Serious Car Crash
On Friday evening, a car split in half and caught fire after crashing into a traffic signal, leaving the driver with serious injuries. The Naperville Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene at Ogden Avenue and Columbia just before 10 p.m. A 47-year-old man from Lisle was driving his 2014 BMW eastbound when it lost control and hit a traffic signal at the southeast corner of the intersection. Upon impact, the car split in half and caught fire. The driver was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. At this time no citations have been filed as the incident is under investigation. Little Friends Demolition Considered
There’s now a set date for when the Historic Preservation Commission will consider an application to demolish the four buildings on Little Friends’ property, including the historic Kroehler Mansion. That meeting is scheduled for October 24. Little Friends, which provides services for people with autism, filed the application back in July, as the organization aims to sell their nearly 4-acre property, in order to move to a new facility next year. That move was partially stalled by a new amendment to the city’s historic preservation ordinance, which requires a third party analysis before any building is removed in the Historic District. Little Friends recently completed a facility condition assessment of their own, which found it could cost nearly $16 million to invest in staying at the property on Wright Street. Little Friends has yet to receive the third party assessment from the city, but expects to receive it before the historic preservation meeting.
FireOps 101
The Naperville Professional Firefighters hosted their first FireOps 101 program on Saturday. Seventeen elected officials from across Illinois spent the day in firefighters’ shoes, going through different emergency scenarios. Participants put out a fire in a room, learned how to force a door open, climbed a firefighter ladder, and ran through an EMS situation. Mayor Steve Chirico, Councilman Patrick Kelly, and Councilman John Krummen were just some who took part in the event.
Oktoberfest 2019
Naper Settlement celebrated all things German at their 10th annual Oktoberfest over the weekend. The event was full of fun activities for everyone, including Oktoberfest pinball, an expanded draft beer menu, traditional food and music, and even a pumpkin carver. This year was extra special for the settlement as they not only hit 10 years for Oktoberfest, but also marked their own 50th anniversary.
