State of the City

Mayor Steve Chirico delivered his 2019 Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce State of the City address today, and used a “Monopoly” theme to highlight the city’s successes. He discussed the steps City Council has taken to be financially responsible, new businesses that have come to town, different accolades Naperville has gathered, and much more. He also touched on growth of the I-88 Corridor, including the purchase of the old Nokia building by Glenstar. The speech concluded with a round of applause in honor of Mayor Emeritus A. George Pradel, who died in September. The full speech will be available on our website this afternoon.

Dominick’s Vacancy Filled

The long-vacant Dominick’s store on Route 59 is finally being filled. LA Fitness will take over a part of the property, while an unnamed boutique grocery store will occupy the rest. Albertsons, the parent company of Jewel-Osco held the lease and kept the space unused for more than five years, preventing a competing grocery store from moving in.

St. Paddy’s 5K

The Rotary Club of Naperville Sunrise joined the West Suburban Irish in hosting the ninth annual St. Patrick’s Day 5k race. Over 2,000 people braved the sub-zero temps for the 8 a.m. start. Dan O’Keefe, a former runner for North Central College, won the race with a time of 14 minutes 47 seconds. The event was followed by the 26th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Money raised was donated to the Alive Center and KidsMatter and you can watch the parade on nctv17.org.
