Veterans Day
The 2019 Veterans Day ceremony was moved into the Alfred Rubin Riverwalk Community Center, but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the community. The room was full of veterans, their families, and others who came to show their support. The Naperville Healing Field of Honor Committee, Naperville American Legion, and Naperville VFW partnered up to host the event.
Rotary Salutes Veterans
The Rotary Club of Naperville also took time to honor veterans by partnering with Illinois Quits of Valor. On Friday, they wrapped five local veterans in hand-made, personalized quilts. The honorees were Sharon Andrews, Chuck Bokar, Mike Boomgarden, Ian Holzhauer, and Sandy Ruta.
Snow Update
Another early-season snow has Naperville Public Works refocusing their efforts from leaf pickup to snow removal. The city is salting major roadways and doesn’t expect major accumulation on the street, but still advises extra caution when traveling due to slick roadways. Leaf pickup will continue today on a limited basis. The city also recommends pedestrians to take care walking on sidewalks, crossing streets, and at train stations.
Local State Champions
It was another championship Saturday for several local sports teams. Benet Academy girls cross country won the 2A state championship, the first state title in program history. Later that day, Naperville North girls cross country won its fourth consecutive state championship in class 3A. The Huskies are now the second girls program ever to reach 10 state championships. Naperville North boys cross country runner Jake Allen finished in third place in the 3A boys race.
Benet Academy boys soccer also had an unforgettable day. The Redwings brought home the 2A state championship after defeating Crystal Lake South by a score of 2-0. It’s the first state title for Benet boys soccer since winning back-to-back in 2000-2001. Congratulations to all the teams on a great fall season.
