Six years and running strong, Feed the Need brought thousands of local volunteers to North Central College to put together meal packs for Feed My Starving Children.
“Feed My Starving Children, we have about 250-300 Mobile Packs like this all over the country every year,” said Marci Wirtz, the event supervisor for Feed My Starving Children. “Also this event is still fundraising. So every scoop of rice, every scoop of vitamins that is used is paid for by donations by people from this community. So we’ve already been working really hard to do that but are still looking for more support from the community.
These packs will give over 2,800 children around the world one meal a day for a year.
“We’re on course to reach our million meals. We packed over 600,000 meals yesterday with the help of about 2,800 volunteers today,” said Co-Founder of Feed the Need, Les May.
Volunteers in and around Naperville have helped with the growth of feed the need, starting with a few hundred volunteers their first year and growing to over 5,000 total this year.
“It’s a sense of local community coming together, churches, and community groups, working together on a global scale,” said Pastor Gary Olson from Good Shepherd Church in Naperville.
New this year to the event was a sponsorship by Gerald KIA. They donated a car to be raffled and all proceeds will go to Feed My Starving Children.
“We give them a blessing when we let them have the opportunity to actually do something that makes you feel good when you leave the room, and it just costs a little bit of time,” said Ginny Gerald, sponsor from the Gerald family.
