To say the 2016 Rio Olympics was a great year for team U.S.A. might be an understatement, and two of those athletes were able to bring the gold back home to Naperville.
White Eagle Elementary School students welcomed Kevin Cordes, who returned to his former school shortly after competing in the Rio Olympics.
The Naperville native visited classes, took pictures with his young fans and even took time for an interview with members of the student council.
Likewise, Morolake Akinosun paid a visit to her alma matter, Waubonsie Valley High School, where students welcomed her with a red carpet walk and pep rally. She also received a key to the city of Aurora. Akinosun won the gold medal for running in the qualifying rounds of the 400-meter relay, where team U.S.A. eventually won gold in the finals.
