There’s a new addition to the community gardens, and it comes from just down the road.
After it was torn down in July of last year, Naperville remembers The Barn as a notable community recreation center, but pieces of it have found a new purpose.
Bricks from The Barn have been added to the idea gardens at the Ron Ory Community Garden Plots. The bricks are the new border separating the plants from the walkway.
“The inspiration came from a year ago when we tore down The Barn and I thought well, we can find some use for them. And so Kent volunteered to do this as an Eagle Scout and he jumped right into it,” said Ron Ory, a master naturalist of the Ron Ory Community Garden Plots.
As a requirement to become an Eagle Scout, Kent Emden led the project, with some help from Ron Ory and the Naperville Park District.
“So I really enjoy this kind of project, it really benefits the community I think and it’s in a very public spot that everyone can go to. And you can see it years to come, and I think it’ll look very nice,” said Emden.
Scouts from Emden’s Troop 505 helped install the bricks, making this the fifth project that a scout troop has done at the community garden plots.
In total, about 350 bricks were used in the project.
