Will County’s new $215 million courthouse is one of the major construction projects sure to make an impact on the area.

Demolition is underway as crews clear space for the new 369,000 square foot courthouse, to be comprised of a 10-story tower featuring 38 state-of-the-art courtrooms.

The project will meet the demands of the growing Will County population and need for more modern courtroom technology.

The new courthouse in Downtown Joliet broke ground in December and construction is slated to be complete in 2020. It takes the place of a once First Midwest Bank building, which was also the former home of the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

The new Will County Sheriff’s Office and Public Safety Complex was completed at the end of last year.

The current Will County Courthouse was built in 1969 and stands across the street from the site of the new courthouse. It will be torn down after the new building is complete and Will County will keep ownership of the land for future use.

Will County is also in the works of developing a new health department building.
