At the most recent District 203 Board of Education Meeting, administrators presented an update on the implementation of standards-based reporting. This form of grading looks at the areas of learning content and process, rather than reporting a traditional letter grade.

This was successfully rolled out at all elementary schools in the fall and is currently being piloted in the sixth grades of Lincoln and Kennedy Junior Highs – a level that could use more work.

“We have learned that we need to do much more learning with our parents to understand the shifts in grading and reporting at this level,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. “Most parents and some teachers feel standards-based reporting did not better communicate student progress over the traditional practice at junior high.”

Officials plan to expand the pilot to include the seventh grades of Lincoln and Kennedy next year, with the eventual goal of standards based reporting being used at all five of 203’s junior highs.

Also at the meeting, the board approved several construction projects, including classroom additions at Elmwood and Steeple Run, and locker room renovations for Naperville North.

And officials also discussed the fact that the state owes them around $8.5 million dollars in categorical payments for this year.
