District 203 Updates Policies and Staffing

At the District 203 board’s most recent meeting, members received an update on the student discipline policy.

The updates included language changes such as the policy title from “student discipline” to “student behavior.”

“I love the change from ‘student discipline’ to ‘student behavior’ because it seems a little bit more proactive,” said board member Kristine Gericke. “’Discipline’ seems like we’re reacting to something that already happened.”

The policy also added a section for teen dating violence.

Also of note at the meeting, each high school will be hiring two additional school psychologists.

“So for every 500 students we should have approximately one school psychologist. So in order to get ourselves aligned to that so we can continue to provide services and meet some of the increased mental health needs of our students we are asking to increase the school psychologists at the high schools,” explained Dr. Christine Igoe, the assistant superintendent for student services.

And 203 classroom nurses may see a pay raise. It was recommended to the board that a $1 increase be made to nurses’ hourly pay for the 2018/2019 school year. This proposal is more is in line with the rate of pay of neighboring District 204.

The next District 203 board meeting will be held on April 23.
