A leadership change is coming to the Downtown Naperville Alliance.
The DNA Board of Directors has announced the appointment of a new executive director, Dawn Portner.
According to a press release, Portner will begin her new role on September 14, succeeding current executive director Katie Wood, who plans to begin semi-retirement.
DNA welcomes Porter from city of Naperville
Portner currently serves as city clerk for the city of Naperville and has previously held several other city positions, which the board says will bring a unique perspective to the DNA.
“Her extensive experience with the City of Naperville, her knowledge of our community and her commitment to Naperville make her an outstanding fit to lead DNA into its next chapter,” said DNA Board Chairman Joseph Tota in the news release. “We are excited about the energy and perspective she will bring to the organization and look forward to all that is ahead.”
Portner shared her enthusiasm in joining the organization.
“Downtown Naperville is a special place, and I look forward to working alongside our businesses, community partners and the DNA team to continue building on its success,” she said in the release.
Wood to support in semi-retirement
Wood will transition to a consultative role with the organization, supporting Portner as she steps into the position.
Wood first began serving as executive director in 2007, overseeing more than 300 shops, restaurants, and other services in Naperville’s Central Business District. She stepped down from the position in 2021, but would return to the role in 2023.

The DNA board applauded Wood’s role in supporting downtown businesses and strengthening the organization in her tenure.
“Katie has made an incredible impact on the Downtown Naperville Alliance and on downtown Naperville as a whole,” said Tota. “Her dedication, passion and leadership have helped make DNA the organization it is today. While we are excited to welcome Dawn, we are equally grateful that Katie will remain connected to the organization in a consultative capacity.”
Wood likewise shared her gratitude for her years at the DNA and remaining connected to the organization moving forward.
“It has been an honor to lead the Downtown Naperville Alliance and work alongside the incredible businesses, partners and community members who make downtown Naperville so special,” Wood said. “I am excited to welcome Dawn and look forward to supporting her and the organization in this next chapter.”
