Edward Hospital recently took the world stage by participating in a broadcast of a cardiac surgery.
“There’s no way that a physician in a hospital that isn’t exposed to this would have any chance of learning it,” said Dr. Mark Goodwin, who led the second surgery. “So this is an opportunity for them to see how complex interventions can be done so can improve their skillset.
That’s why the surgery was broadcast to the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics annual conference in Denver, Colorado.
It’s the largest convention in the world for interventional cardiologists.
“This is, in our world, a fairly major accomplishment for Edward to be able to host a site like this,” Goodwin said. “It’s training so many cardiologists from literally across the world. From Asia, Europe, the Middle East, the entire world is at this conference and South America, so it’s a very exciting time for us.”
In these two surgeries, Edward’s doctors performed percutaneous coronary interventions on patients with chronic total occlusions, or artery blockages in their hearts.
“It’s a difficult case but a good teaching case. The audience can learn, as we go through the case, different options and strategies of how to care for a patient,” Goodwin explained.
As a global training site for CTOs, Edward was chosen as the only community hospital in the world to participate.
But Goodwin said being on the world stage doesn’t change the procedure.
“There might be a camera in the room, there might be a mic on but we treat it the exact same. Once we’re in the room, we’re taking care of a patient. Ignore the lights, ignore the sound and just do what we normally do,” Goodwin said.
During the surgeries, attendees of the convention were able to ask questions and have them answered in real time, creating a life-saving lesson that reaches across the world.
