As temperatures continue to drop, that cold weather brings flu season along with it.
The flu, or influenza, is easily transmitted through coughing and sneezing, circulating through the air especially during the winter season.
“The other thing about the influenza virus is that it mutates every season. So as a virus changes, our immune system doesn’t recognize it. So that’s why each year you need to be re-vaccinated for the flu because the virus changes,” explained Dr. Jonathan Pinsky, the medical director of infection control at Edward Hospital.
Anyone six months of age and older can get an influenza vaccine. Dr. Pinsky says it’s extremely important for healthcare workers, pregnant women, anyone who works with children, and those with a weak immune system to get their flu shots.
Dr. Pinsky recommends getting your flu shot now since there are currently very low levels of the flu, and the virus is expected to take off in the New Year.
Remember to wash your hands and cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing to help prevent sickness.
