Grant Van Muren was sentenced to 20 years in prison for second-degree murder and aggravated arson after strangling his 55-year-old Naperville roommate Charles Clark during an argument, and then attempted to set fire to the townhouse.

The sentencing comes after the courtroom heard from several police officers and sheriffs who testified to previous encounters with Muren.

Muren then gave a lengthy testimony refuting prosecutors and arguing that they exaggerated his past criminal instances.

Because of jail time already served and sentencing guidelines, Muren could be eligible for parole in about nine years.
