Kids Identification and Safety Seat Event
The Illinois Tollway and Illinois State Police District 15 hosted the Kid’s Identification and Safety Seat, or K.I.S.S, event at the DuPage Children’s Museum.
The free event allowed parents to have their car seats or booster seats checked to make sure they are installed correctly.
Education Officer Duane Chappell has found that about 90 percent of seats they check are installed improperly.
Common Mistakes
This can happen because of common mistakes.
“Some common mistakes that we see with installations have to do with positioning. That’s the first mistake we see when we open up the car door. The straps in the car seat are sometimes mispositioned for the angle of the child or the size of the child,” said Chappell. “One more that we commonly see is extra devices or pillows or cushions trying to help position the car seat in the vehicle when if it’s installed properly, you shouldn’t need anything in there.”
The most important piece of advice is to seek help at your local police or fire department if you don’t know how to install your car seat.
Identification Cards
Parents were also able to create identification cards for younger children, which can help in the case they get lost.
