TG Pacifica Square is a new development coming to Yorkshire Plaza at the corner of Route 59 and East New York Street.
At the recent groundbreaking ceremony, the developer shared plans that would make this the largest Asian shopping center in the country.
Eddie Ni, the president of Pacifica Square, said this development would make the greater Chicagoland area more convenient for the Asian community.
“It’ll be a one-stop shop,” he said.
The groundbreaking included a traditional Chinese dragon dance, a blessing from the ancestors and a tour of the stores to be filled.
“The second largest Asian community in the entire state is this area right here in my Senate district, which includes Aurora and parts of Naperville. To have this development take place here in Aurora is a huge asset to that community,” said Illinois State Senator Linda Holmes, District 42.
The development plan comes in three phases including filling vacant spaces with restaurants and services followed by an office building and a future residential building with additional shops.
Local leaders say the development will be an asset to the entire community.
“Vacant strip malls have been detrimental and just been an eyesore to our community for a long period of time, and now that we are actually filling it, the Pacifica Square development is going to fill all the spaces in the strip mall. That helps with our tax base. That helps with our local economy, and it definitely is an improvement of the community as a whole giving diverse shopping opportunities to people in the community,” said Illinois State Representative Stephanie Kifowit, District 84.
The first phase of construction is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
