Some little babies are sharing a big message at Edward Hospital this month.
In recognition of American Heart Month, babies born in February receive a red hat as part of the American Heart Association’s Little Hats, Big Hearts program.
Edward-Elmhurst Health is working with the AHA and the Children’s Heart Foundation to raise awareness of heart disease.
The AHA collects red baby hats knitted or crocheted by volunteers to distribute to participating hospitals across the country.
Annie Gomez recently welcomed little Elliott at Edward. She said Elliott’s hat message hits close to home after his grandfather suffered from heart disease.
“For my dad he was not a drinker or smoker, and he was always very healthy. So it was a big eye opener when all of a sudden I’m getting a call in college and he was scheduled for surgery,” Annie said.
Annie said she hopes the hats can make others more aware of heart disease.
Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans, and congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defect in the U.S.
