In recognition of American Heart Month, any baby born in February gets a tiny red hat to help share Little Hats, Big Hearts’ mission: heart-healthy lives for everyone.
Edward Hospital is helping the American Heart Association and The Children’s Heart Foundation raise awareness about heart disease.
“Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States. And congenital heart defects which means babies are born with it, is the number one killer of newborns,” said Terry Parker, a mother-baby nurse at Edward Hospital
These bright red hats are knitted by volunteers, which then get distributed to participating hospitals. They serve as a reminder to first-time moms and families about the importance of early detection and treatment, to give the tiniest hearts, a strong start in life.
The program, which originated in Chicago in 2014, has now outfitted hundreds of thousands of babies in over 40 states.
