Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year begins on January 28 this year.

Celebrations were underway at the Xilin Association in Naperville, with those in the senior program participating in a Chinese New Year’s Eve party.

Complete with decorations, food and storytelling, the festivities got to the heart of what makes Chinese New Year special.

“Family gets together to celebrate prosperity, to wish for a great next year and to be thankful for the whole family to be healthy and prosperous, and actually the meaning is the same globally,” said Chairman of Naperville’s Xilin Association, Bill Liu.

Typically beginning on the first day of the lunar year, and going for fifteen days, celebrations end with a large gatherings, like the Xilin Lantern Festival.

However this year Naperville’s Lantern Festival will be in April to allow participants to celebrate Chinese New Year with their families.

“We wish everyone a wonderful Chinese New Year and a great 2017,” said Liu.

2017 is the year of the rooster.
