Naperville City Council Considers Allowing Boats in Driveways

The Naperville City Council is considering whether to allow some recreational vehicle parking on driveways in town.

At its most recent meeting, the council heard from Chris Hagenbaumer, who wants to keep his ski boat on his driveway between lake weekends.

Hagenbaumer said he received an ordinance violation notice when someone complained about the boat parked in his driveway.

Current city regulations require that recreational vehicles be parked in driveways for no more than 48 hours at a time or no more than 14 days in a month.

Hagenbaumer asked that council consider revising the regulation or creating a permit process, but council was split on the issue.

“I think people should be able to do with their property what they want to unless they are doing something to harm someone else’s experience with their property and home,” said Councilman Kevin Coyne.

But Mayor Steve Chirico disagreed.

“I don’t think people living in these communities want to see storage of recreational vehicles or landscape equipment or whatever it is that people have: snowmobiles, empty trailers, you name it,” he said.

The city attorney was instructed to look into whether a permit process can be created to allow exceptions to the parking rules.
