The Naperville City Council recently approved the city’s $443 million budget.

At its most recent meeting, council debated tabling the budget vote in order to find more cost-cutting measures.

However, city staff directed council to go ahead and approve a budget to meet a late December deadline to file the property tax levy with the county.

The property tax must be considered in a separate meeting from the budget approval.

While some council members say they want to cut more from the budget, Mayor Steve Chirico worries too many cuts will have an unintended effect.

“I don’t want to see us now take away the services that our community wants,” Chirico said. “I think that’s what we’re starting. We’re going to get to that point, and I think we’ve already entered that area, and i think it will show up on our next resident survey.”

The budget was passed in a 5-4 vote with council directing staff to look for more cost-cutting measures.

The budget can be amended downward at any point.

Council is scheduled to consider the city’s portion of the property tax levy on December 19.
