More Downtown Naperville restaurants may soon be able to serve liquor outdoors.

This comes after discussion at the March liquor commission meeting.

Under a proposed ordinance, qualifying Downtown Naperville restaurants would be able to serve alcohol to customers dining outdoors at tables that are technically on city property, like sidewalks.

To qualify, restaurants would need to meet specific guidelines like having enough space for pedestrian traffic and complying with city codes.

While many commissioners were in support of the idea, they directed city staff to re-examine portions of the ordinance and bring it back to the commission for further review. The measure will then be sent to council for final approval.

Currently, only establishments with outdoor dining on private property can serve alcohol to patrons outside.
