The Naperville Household Hazardous Waste Facility on Fort Hill Drive opened in 2015, but could soon see a reduction in hours or even be shut down.
That’s because the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is putting a $250,000 cap on the facility’s expenses in 2018 – less than half of the $516,000 paid in 2017.
Any costs past that would need to be paid by the City of Naperville and the other communities that use the facility.
Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico says the city and other communities pay to operate the facility, but the state has traditionally paid for the cost to dispose of the waste.
“From my perspective I hope they find a solution to this because I don’t think I will support putting this burden on the taxpayers of us having to take care of the waste that they have mandated be removed. This is their responsibility,” Chirico said.
With the $250,000 agreement, operations at the hazardous waste site have been extended for six months.
Illinois EPA officials say the cap will help the agency budget properly for things such as one-day household hazardous waste collection events.
