The Naperville Police are reminding residents to be aware of their surroundings after a number of local carjackings.
Recently the police responded to a call on the 100 block of Testa Drive, in which a 61-year-old man’s car was stolen at gunpoint. It’s the third carjacking that’s occurred in Naperville since February of this year.
Naperville Police Chief Bob Marshall says these types of violent crimes are unusual for the area, and residents should be cognizant of their surroundings.
“If somebody does threaten violence, in this case the individual did display a firearm, don’t resist, give the individual your car. Actually this is a property crime, but it’s the threat of violence,” said Marshall.
The Champaign Police say the stolen car was later used to rob a video poker store in Champaign, Illinois.
The vehicle stolen from the first carjacking in town this year in which a woman’s car was stolen at gunpoint near the Ann Reid Early Childhood Center, was located, and police have a suspect in custody.
As of this taping, the cases are still under investigation.
There were no carjackings in Naperville for the entire year of 2016.
