A Naperville woman’s sunset photo was a colorful win in the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s December photo contest.
Nancy Havener was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. As traveled to and from treatments, she found inspiration in nature, leading to an unexpected new hobby – photography. Whalon Lake became a favorite stop.
“So I started coming here on my Fridays as I went through radiation. And it was just a time of reflection, I would pray, and just be thankful that I made it through another week,” explained Havener.
The retired band director started by snapping photos of birds around the area. She began submitting her work to contests, and won big last month in the “Preserve the Moment” contest, with a sunset photo over Whalon Lake.
Havener hopes other cancer survivors and seniors find new adventures like she has with photography.
“And I want to be the best photographer that this old lady can ever be,” she joked.
