City officials are once again considering changing the overnight street parking policy.
At the latest Naperville City Council meeting, Councilman John Krummen brought up the idea of suspending Naperville’s overnight on-street parking policy for the summer months.
“Would you see any problem in, for lack of a better word, suspending our overnight parking over the summer when college students and others tend to be home,” Krummen asked city staff.
Krummen said garages and driveways tend to fill up quicker and some families find it difficult to not park on the street.
Back in 2016, the city began a study in some neighborhoods to test overnight parking in the street.
Police Chief Bob Marshall said they are in the process of evaluating that data and formalizing a report to the City Manager that will include a recommendation to either alter the existing policy, or keep it as is.
Currently street parking is prohibited between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. unless special permission is granted by the police department.
The overnight parking policy was put in place in 1960 to deter crime.
