April 22 was Earth Day and the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County took part by hosting a pick-me-up.
About 20 volunteers came out to help pick up litter found in Springbrook Prairie.
“I always like to think every day is Earth Day,” said David Sima, a Springbrook Prairie senior ranger. “It’s not just today or this week that the earth needs help and that we pick up trash. It’s every day of the year could use some help.”
When the snow is gone more trash is found. And with more trash comes the need for more volunteers.
“With over 500 miles of boundaries within the county, it’s very difficult for our small amount of staff to be able to clean everything up. So it is important for us to get volunteers out to help with events like this,” said Sima.
Sima asks people to be mindful of their trash when visiting the preserves and avoid throwing trash out the car window.
Volunteers are welcome to do their part any time of the year by calling the preserve to set up a day and time to help keep our earth clean.
