A proposition to dissolve the DuPage County Election Commission and consolidate its functions with the Office of the DuPage County Clerk is on the ballot for March 20.
The proposition is nonbinding, but if approved County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said he will ask state lawmakers to make the change.
This comes after state lawmakers failed to pass legislation that would move elections to the jurisdiction of the clerk’s office and create a bipartisan oversight board.
Election oversight was previously a power of the clerk’s office before the election commission was created in the 1970s.
Officials say combining the two offices could save taxpayers at least $300,000 a year by combining staff and streamlining services.
A similar proposition is on the ballot for Aurora residents regarding the Aurora Election Commission.
