The DuPage Children’s Museum is remembering their co-founder Louise Beem after her death on April 15.
An intellectual force for children’s education, Louise Beem spent her life dedicated to learning.
As early childhood educators, Louise Beem and Dorothy Carpenter began a mobile children’s museum in 1987, as a way to provide hands-on experiences for kids in the areas of math, science and the arts.
Through Beem’s leadership, exhibits began to grow, blossoming into what is now the DuPage Children’s Museum in Naperville, attracting families for generations to come.
Those she worked with remember her dedication to fostering growth in children.
“She herself had a real commitment to constructivism as a way of learning for young children. She had great respect for the individual abilities of young children and her whole idea was to help them become confident problem solvers,” said Cynthia Mark-Hummel, a DCM Board Member and a friend of Louise.
Louise was married to Marc Beem and together they raised four children and many grandchildren.
She was also honored by the College of DuPage who named their Early Childhood Center in her honor.
Louise died in her sleep at the age of 93.
