Safer Naper on Alcohol Awareness

Annually, 88,000 deaths can be chalked up to alcohol-related causes.

That makes it the third leading cause of preventable deaths nationwide.

So the Naperville Police Department says if you choose to drink, do so in moderation and safely.

“We always recommend drinking safely and responsibly,” said Julie Smith, crime prevention specialist with the Naperville Police Department. “It’s so easy now to plan ahead if you’re going out drinking with your friends and family. There are ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft so you don’t have to drive, it’s important to plan ahead to get that designated driver before you leave for the night.”

The City of Naperville has a number of rules in place to keep bar and restaurant patrons safe – no happy hour promotions, and within one hour of closing, no entry and no shots.

The State of Illinois requires BASSET training for all restaurant staffers who serve alcohol, but while an online course will cut it for most other cities, Naperville requires in-person training.

“The Naperville Police Department works hand in hand with local businesses, restaurants, and bars to provide training and resources for their employees, servers, and management to provide a safe environment for consuming alcoholic beverages,” said Smith.

Over the last few years, Naperville has seen a decrease in DUIs and alcohol-related disorderly conduct arrests.
