The Senior Task Force recognized one philanthropic senior with a new award.

Barbara Appelson is the inaugural winner of the task force’s “Senior of the Year” award.

“I didn’t even know about the Senior Task Force before Karen Courney called me about five weeks ago to tell me, ‘You’re the winner!’” said Appelson.

Appelson was recognized at the latest Naperville City Council meeting for her work with Riverwalk Adult Day Services, where she has been volunteering for about four years.

She works with many seniors with dementia, making sure they eat their food while telling them stories of her travels.

Appelson went above and beyond by creating a quilted wall hanging featuring the RADS new logo, which is currently on display at the center.

“I was just inspired to make a fabric design,” said Appelson. “It was nice, but it was not a big deal in the sense that I’ve done these things for 30 years.”

Appelson also helps RADS with fundraising and is active with the DuPage Unitarian Church.
