Naperville City Council made some changes to the 5th Avenue Steering Committee.
The group hasn’t met in several months, and council took the chance to update how the committee operates.
The DuPage Children’s Museum will now have a voice on the committee, to reflect their view now that the museum is officially staying on site.
City staff will also run the meetings in place of Ryan Companies, who is not the official developer, but has done community outreach on the project.
“I just wonder how appropriate it is for having a private company running the steering committee that’s about a public development, especially as there’s kind of a conflict of interest as that’s the work they do,” said Councilwoman Theresa Sullivan.
“Really an elephant in the room, whether it’s very soon or in the midterm future, at some point, I think the steering committee or the community at large is going to have to grapple with the issue of whether or not we want to bring in concepts from other developers,” said Councilman Patrick Kelly.
Councilman Kelly, who formerly sat on the 5th Avenue Steering Committee as his neighborhood’s representative, will now appear as a council liaison, along with Councilwoman Judy Brodhead.
Council also chose to eliminate the council liaisons’ voting privileges on the committee.
