Barrington vs. Naperville North 3A IHSA Girls State Soccer Final 6.1.19

The 3A girls soccer state championship game pits two time defending champion Barrington against the Huskies of Naperville North. These teams met in the state semi finals a year ago with the Fillies prevailing 1-0. North took down Lyons Township in penalty kicks to make the final while Barrington defeated New Trier 2-1.

First Half

A lot of great defense in this matchup as the Huskies battle hard to prevent Barrington from getting a clean look, Reilly Riggs, Kaitlyn Castillo and eventually Paige Sylvester clear the ball out to keep the Fillies off the board.

Late in the first half, Leah Shumate with a free kick and the best chance so far for North, her shot is on line but headed away by a Barrington defender as the game remains scoreless at halftime.

Second Half

Fillies on the attack in the 2nd half, Ashley Prell breaks free behind the defense and streaks down the sideline, Emily Magee goes to cut off the angle and Prell’s shot sails just over the crossbar as we head to overtime, still without a score.

Over Time

In the 2nd OT, Barrington with another opportunity, Tina Teik with a nice move to get some room, but her shot is just knocked away by a diving Amanda Johnson to keep the game tied and send the championship to penalty kicks.

The Huskies looking for back to back PK wins while Barrington has won both of its state championships via penalty kick victory over New Trier.

The Huskies kick first in the best of five and just like the semi final, Leah Shumate starts her team on the right foot with a goal. North did not have a shot on goal during all 100 minutes of regulation and overtime.

First up for the Fillies is Tina Teik, she goes to the right, but Johnson is all over it, smothering the ball with her midsection, Huskies up 1-0 after the first round.

Katie Murphy is up next for North and she has the right idea, but the shot is a little too high and off the crossbar, big break for Barrington.

Madi Rosen looks to capitalize for Barrington, but she pushes her shot wide of the net and North holds on to its 1-0 lead after two rounds of shots.

Up third for the Huskies is Emily Dulik, the sophomore goes right corner and finds the twine to give North a 2-0 lead, putting the pressure back on the Fillies.

Christine Batliner steps up for Barrington in a must score situation, Amand Johnson gets in front of the shot but doesn’t get enough of the ball as it deflects into the net for a goal. 2-1 North after three rounds.

Huskies leading scorer Hannah Martin takes her turn 4th, but Barrington goalie Leah Eisenbarth is all over it to make the save, keeping Barrington alive.

Juliana Moreno can tie things up in the Fillies half of the 4th round, but Amanda Johnson makes another monster save gliding to her right. The Huskies one goal or stop away from a state championship.

It all comes down to Naperville North senior Maddie Schlecht, a Wisconsin recruit playing her first year with the high school team and now she’s a Huskie legend as she gets the game winning penalty kick to go! Naperville North wins 3-1 in PK’s to win its 4th state championship and first since going back to back in 2012 and 2013. Only 8 regular season wins but a 7-0 post season runs puts the Huskies back on top of the state. Naperville North is first school since St. Charles in 1996 and 97 to win the boys and girls state soccer championships in the same season.
