IHSA Class 2A state championship game has the Benet Academy Redwings looking for their first state trophy facing off against Wauconda and the wings have a strong fan section supporting them at North Central College. The Redwings took down Triad in the semi finals to earn their spot in the championship for the first time.

First Half

First half action. Mary Kate Hansen with the boot sends it right on net but Waubonsie’s MacKenzie Arden grabs it out of the air to keep the scoreboard empty.

Wauconda was the first to get on the board in their semifinal game against Joliet Catholic and they will do it again as Abigail McHugh uses her head just past Eva Frantzen for the first goal of the game.

Second Half

Second half of play and Benet looks for a response off a through in but Arden collects the bouncing ball for another save and the score is still 1-0.

Benet not going down without a fight though. Mary Kate Hansen off the leading pass just boots one to the upper shelf to tie the game up at 1 and get the redwings rowdy in the stands.

Game still tied at one and Mia Tommasone looks for the redwings to take the lead but her kick sails over the crossbar and we head to overtime with the game knotted at 1s.

Over Time

Nothing happened in the first overtime, to the second and Abby Casmere fighting with a defender working towards the net, she spins, breaks free but looses the ball only to have Jaimee Cibulka track it down and send it soaring to the back of the net. The Benet Academy Redwings win their first ever state title, defeating Wauconda in double over time 2-1.
