For the past nine seasons, a Schramek has been on the roster for Benet Academy girls basketball. Over that stretch of time, which began with Emily Schramek in the fall of 2011, the Redwing basketball program developed into a full on state powerhouse.
In the spring of 2015, Emily, then a senior and middle sister Kendal, a sophomore helped guide Benet to a 4A state championship win over Fremd. The youngest, Brooke Schramek cheered from the stands as a 7th grader, eagerly awaiting her opportunity to play on the state’s biggest stage.
The following year, Kendal and her Redwing teammates returned to Redbird arena and repeated as state champions, the 2nd state trophy for the Scramek family.
Brooke Joins the Roster
In the fall of 2016, Brooke joined Kendall in the Benet lineup and immediately proved to be a key contributor for Coach Kilbride. The Redwings fell one game short of state that season, dropping the super sectional final to Edwardsville, but young Brooke played beyond her years throughout the year, proving she was ready to carry on the family legacy.
Ever since her freshman campaign, Brooke Schramek has been a swiss army knife for the Benet roster. At 6’2, she can use her size and quickness to score from the post and shoots well enough to hit from beyond the arc. Brooke is also a willing passer and rebounder and a tough defender, whatever needs to be done to help her team win.
Last spring, Brooke and her BA teammates finally broke through and made their own mark on the state tournament, winning the Romeoville super sectional with victories over Simeon, Montini and Oswego along the way. While the Redwings fell short of the state championship, they did bring home their third state trophy in five years by finishing 4th.
Entering the Home Stretch
Now a career 1,000 point scorer and a signed commit for the University of Wisconsin, the youngest Schramek hopes to finish the nearly decade long family dynasty on a high note as the post season approaches. When Coach Kilbride looks back at all that the Schramek family has brought to the Benet program, he only has one regret…that the family stopped after having three girls!
