Downers Grove North hosting a boys track and field sectional. Naperville Central, North and Benet Academy are all looking to extend their seasons and qualify for state.
Field Events
We start first in the long jump pit with Jay Coleman from Central. He sets a new personal best and qualifies for state with a jump of 22-1.5
Let’s throw some things, shall we? Central’s Ben Cianchetti tossing discus with a heave of 136-08.
Romeoville’s Amari Buchanan really showing off his muscles here. He gets a distance of 158-08.
Back to more jumping with Huskie Justin Gnade. Down the wet runway and he leaps 43 feet 11.5 inches.
Running Events
Let’s venture to the track… which just got down poured on… for the 4 by 800 meter run and Naperville Central seeded with the best time. Thomas Codo anchoring the relay and he pulls off the win in 8 minutes 1.73 seconds, qualifying them for the blue oval.
4 by 100 relay now and the weather looked good when the gun went off but by the time Central’s Cade McDonald got the baton… it is obviously pouring. Doesn’t matter, central gets another big relay win in 43.23 seconds.
McDonald also ran the 100 meter dash, seems to be something he excels at. Down the very puddle-ridden track in 11 seconds to qualify for state in this race as well.
Let’s go back to jumping over things with the 300 meter hurdles. Benet’s Brendan Carter’s first place finish qualifies him for state with a time of 39.74, just edging out a pair of Hinsdale Central runners.
Let’s do a longer one, shall we. The mile run has Redhawk Thomas Shilgalis with the number one on his chest and that isn’t a fluke. It’s smooth sailing for him in the end, heading down to state with a 4:21 mile. He also qualified in the 800 as well.
Let’s finish this day off with the 200 meter. Benet’s Ian Smith in the yellow coming down the stretch. He finishes first in 22.64 seconds. Naperville Central would be the big winners of the night though, adding another notch to their belt with 99 points. Naperville North finishes third at the Downers Grove North Sectional.
