Go back in time with Neuqua graduate Brett Meyers, a member of the Wildcats Boys Tennis team, presented by Molly Maids of the Aurora Naperville Area.
Who is Brett Meyers?
It has been over 20 years since Trudy Bennorth took the reigns the the varsity boys and girls tennis coach at Neuqua Valley. Many conference champions, sectional champions and state qualifiers have played on the Neuqua courts over that time, but few have had the overall impact of 2016 graduate Brett Meyers.
In his four seasons on varsity, Meyers was part of four conference and sectional team championships. But unlike many of his Naperville area counterparts, Brett Meyers didn’t just step on the court and take the top singles spot as a freshman, he improved greatly year after year before becoming the team’s ace and a three time state qualifier
In the 2016 season, everything clicked into place for the Wildcat captain. He won the Plainfield East sectional championship, his second straight sectional crown, and took that momentum to the state meet, where he finished in 5th place, an All state performance. After ending a decorated high school career with a record of 110-14, it was on to the next challenge, playing collegiate tennis at Marquette University.
His Collegiate Career
It didn’t take long for the former Wildcat to make an impact, playing mostly in the four, five or six spot, Meyers led the team in dual meet victories with a 16-3 record in singles play as the Golden Eagles finished as the Big East tournament runner up.
Last season, Brett earned the program’s Most Valuable Player Award after leading the program with 35 total victories, 19 coming in singles play and a 13-7 dual meet record in number one doubles with partner Alvaro Verdu. Marquette was able to win the Big East Championship and advance to the NCAA tournament, both firsts for the Golden Eagle’s men’s tennis program.
This season, Meyers has remained with Verdu in the top doubles pairing and competes almost exclusively in number four singles. His stellar play earned him Big East player of the week honors earlier this month.
The Golden Eagles found themselves back in the Big East Championship match this month for a 4th consecutive season behind the stellar play of Meyers and his teammates.
The skillful, hard working player with a great attitude that Coach Bennorth saw grow up in his four years at Neuqua continues to take his game to higher levels. It will come as no surprise to anyone to see success follow Brett Meyers through the rest of his playing career and beyond.
