Metea Valley welcomes their third Athletic Director in three years. NSW sat down with the new mustang in charge for this feature, presented by Edward Medical Group.
The Story
For the third time in as many years, the Mustangs have new hands on the reigns.
Matt Fehrmann: It was something I was ready for. I think I needed another year under the belt being the assistant AD and I know I can offer more to this school than I have, being just a PE teacher and coach.
Matt Fehrmann had been the assistant athletic director for the previous 3 years, but now it’s his time to lead Metea Valley.
Matt: I was extremely excited that the opportunity arose and even more excited to have people reach out to me to say hey, you can do this. We want you to put in for it.
Fehrmann has learned from former AD’s — Dan Dybrucker, who is now Metea’s Assistant Principal, and Jason Ward, now the Assistant Principal at East Aurora.
His priority in year one – boosting awareness for athletic participation in the building.
Matt: We have to focus a little bit more on the building, promoting our athletics. We’re seeing kids in the all that you know should be involved. And if they’re in one sport and they’re athletic, let’s get them playing a second sport. Having coaches understand that responsibility, like hey, we want to share our athlete’s and promote the whole athletic program versus being more individualized.
Having been a part of Neuqua Valley for 10 years before joining Metea Valley as a coach and PE teacher, Fehrmann is now relishing the opportunity to bridge the gap between academics and athletics.
Matt: I feel like I’m part of the whole building now. Which is rewarding to me. The athletics is icing on the cake. It’s time I can go out and see the athletes and coaches at work.
And if things go right, Fehrmann will be the man to buck the trend and help the Mustangs stampede to a bright future.
