For this week’s Off the Field, presented by Molly Maids of Aurora Naperville Area, we check in with Nick Asuan who plays on the Valley Boys Lacrosse team and is a part of the Jazz Ensemble.
How Prepared is the Double Athlete?
Graduations is still a month away… college, a few months after that… but the last four years have left Nick Asuan of Metea Valley Mustang ready for his next endeavor, “I think I’m prepared. My teachers have given me the opportunity to work hard and just manage my time wisely and I think I will be successful at Otterbein. I’ve already been contacted by teachers and professors over there so yeah, I’m excited.”
Nick Asuan is no ordinary high school student. The number of activities and sports he has participated in is staggering.
The senior has played in over 8 different musical groups (primarily playing the bass), while also becoming an offensive juggernaut for “The Valley” lacrosse team.
“It’s tough, it’s definitely tough to balance music and sports side of things but I’m lucky I have really good teachers and really good coaches and music directors that are also super accepting and supportive and they want me to participate in everything that I want and they kind of facilitate that for me and they are able to move things around like I am,” he says.
Where Does the Motivation Come From?
The motivation, and quite frankly, the energy needed to get through the day have been years in the making. And a lot of what Nick Asuan does, he gets from him family, “It’s actually kind of funny. I started playing lacrosse and music right around the same time, about 4th and 5th grade. My cousin is a luthier, he makes instruments for a living and so I kind of took that from him, he started on bass for I just did that, that’s the instrument I wanted to play so I stuck with it, I loved it. And lacrosse was right around the same time. I used to play baseball and my brother played lacrosse in high school and that first game I saw him play he knocked someone out actually and I turned to my dad and I said dad I don’t want to play baseball anymore and that’s how I started playing lacrosse.”
What’s Next For the Senior?
Asuan will be heading to Otterbein University in the fall… where, you guessed it… he will be in musical groups and play lacrosse. Oh… and study political science with an eye on becoming a lawyer. So will he ever take a break?
“It doesn’t stop,” he says with a smile.
No break it is… next up, a new jammed-packed adventure, filled with musical notes and lacrosse sticks.
