Oak Park River Forest and junior quarterback Jaden McGill are in town to face Waubonsie Valley as the Warriors celebrate senior night for their fall athletes. Ethan Nelson is the new starter under center for WV, in search of a 2nd straight season opening win over the Huskies.
First Half
Opening drive for Waubonsie Valley, Warriors facing 3rd and 15 at their own 39, Ethan Nelson finds a wide open Elijah Lee, who cuts back towards the middle, breaks a tackle and suddenly finds himself all alone racing down the opposite sideline, going all the way for a 61 yard touchdown. 7-0 Waubonsie.
After a field goal from Alex Brots, the Waubonsie defense puts up an impressive first half as Grayson Griffin flies in for a sack on third down to force a punt. 10-0 Warriors at halftime.
Third Quarter
After OPRF goes three and out to start the 2nd half, Ethan Nelson drops a perfect pass into the arms of Sean Clinton, who breaks away for the 46 yard touchdown. 17-0, Waubonsie dominating.
Next drive for the Huskies, inside their own 30, handoff goes to Kelby Gray, who slips a tackle and bursts into the open field and wins the footrace. OPRF right back into the game down 17-6 with over a quarter and a half to play.
After Waubonsie is forced to punt, Huskies driving inside the WV 40, Jaden McGill takes it himself up the middle, spins out of a tackle, then shakes free of five defenders and somehow finding his way to the endzone. Huskies get the two point conversion and suddenly trail 17-14!
Fourth Quarter
Early in the 4th quarter, Warriors go for it on 4th and 4 at the OPRF 31, Ethan Nelson throws to his tight end Demari Wilson, who bobbles the ball, but manages to hang on for the huge six yard gain to move the chains.
A couple players later, Nelson fakes the handoff and finds Wilson again over the middle. The big man rumbles across the goal line for the touchdown, Nelson’s third of the game, WV takes a 23-14 lead with 8 minutes to play.
OPRF looking to get a quick score, Warriors blitz on third down, forcing the quick throw as Elijah Lee makes his prescence felt again with the interception to seal the win. Waubonsie Valley starts the year 1-0 with an impressive 23-14 victory.
