Benet Academy traveling over an hour to Sterling High School to face off in the Super Sectionals against Peoria Notre Dame. The Redwing defense has only let up 4 goals this season and look to keep that number low to advance to the State Semifinals.
First Half
Fourth minute of play and Benet all ready on the offensive move. Benet’s Sam Hepburn finds Trent McVey but his shot is swallowed up by Lucas Fontana. Scoreboard stays empty.
24th minute of action, Nicholas Augustyn with the free kick. He winds up but again Fontana blocks the shot to keep the board clean.
Notre Dame’s turn to get a shot off with just two minutes left until the break. Noah Madrigal takes a shot through defenders but Vito Staniskis falls on the ball.
Just a minute left until intermission and Benet once more on the offensive break. Nicholas Augustyn feeds the ball through to Trent McVey who slides the ball right past PNO and finds the back of the net. The Redwings are in the lead 1-0 at halftime.
Second Half
42nd minute of play, beginning of the second half and Benet Academy does it again. Nicholas Augustyn gets his second assist of the day as he feeds Sam Hepburn who puts the ball past Fontana to double the wings lead, 2-0.
Still a lot of soccer to play and Trent McVey looking to get another goal… He takes a shot from the top of the box but Fontana makes the stop to keep the Irish in this game.
Under ten minutes to go and PNO’s last effort comes from Declan Dillon but Vito Staniskis tracks it nicely to keep his sheet clean and for the redwings to advance to the state semifinals where they will face off against St. Laurence.
