Benedictine Museum Gets $50K Grant:
Benedictine University’s Jurica-Suchy Nature Museum has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The grant is awarded to just 15 percent of those submitting proposals, and is part of the Inspire! Grants for Small Museums program. The natural history museum is located on the second floor of the Michael and Kay Birck Hall of Science. These funds will be used to help support the two-year project, “Safeguarding our Specimens: Improving Research Collections Stewardship of the Jurica-Suchy Nature Museum.”
Naper Settlement Building Plans On Hold:
Naper Settlement plans to add on an agricultural interpretive center and Innovation Gateway remain on hold. Proposals for each project were pitched in 2016 and 2017 respectively, with funding efforts still falling a third short of what’s needed. The museum hopes to get those remaining funds from the city. Mayor Steve Chirico told the Daily Herald that finding the money could be tough, and would likely have to be addressed and considered one building at a time.
Frank E. Fling Mile Registration:
Registration is now open for the Frank E.’s Fling Mile race at the Naperville Jaycees Last Fling. The flat and fast one mile trek through Downtown Naperville will be held September 2. It’s open to runners of all ages, with a $25 entry fee. The race is chip-timed, with age and category winners announced after the run – though any entrant beating Fling mascot Frank E. Fling is ensured a medal. You can sign up online through noon on September 1.
Armored Truck Tug:
Five members of the Naperville Police Department headed to Plainfield yesterday for the Plainfield Police Armored Truck Challenge. Teams of five tried to tug the truck 75 feet, in an effort to be the fastest. But win or lose – funds raised through the event all went to a good cause, Special Olympics Illinois.
