A “No” Vote for Bucky’s:
Last night the Planning and Zoning Commission voted against plans for a new Bucky’s gas station and car wash. The project developed by Buchanan Energy was pitched for the Fair Oaks lot on the corner of East Ogden Avenue and Naper Boulevard. The lot has been vacant since 2012, and though the city has looked to redevelop the East Ogden Avenue corridor for years, city staff recommended a vote of no. They say the project doesn’t bring the favored big retail or long-term development they’re looking for in that area. There’s also another Bucky’s station across the road from that location. The commission gave a 6-1 vote against the project, which now goes to Naperville City Council.
Chamber Candidate Mixer:
Last night candidates running for mayor and city council took part in a new meet and greet event sponsored by the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce. The group hosted their first Candidate Mixer at Embassy Suites. Numbered tables were spread out around the room, and each candidate took a five minute turn at each one, getting the chance to chat with residents in a more intimate setting, before moving on to the next group. There are two candidates for mayor, and 11 vying for four open council seats. The election will be held April 2.
SECA Considers Sunset Policy:
The SECA Commission is considering a Sunset Policy for its grant recipients. At the commission’s task force meeting this morning, officials discussed the pros and cons of dropping projects from their funding after an unspecified number of years. The SECA Commission will continue the discussion and make a recommendation at a future meeting.
Heritage Society Turns 50:
The Naperville Heritage Society has turned 50! The historic group, which oversees Naper Settlement, was honored at Tuesday’s city council meeting with a proclamation declaring February 19 as Naperville Heritage Society Day in the City of Naperville. After the meeting there was a small reception with a commemorative cake.
