District 204 Parents Want Long-Term Boundary Changes

In a follow up to the Engage 204 discussion on changing enrollment – Brookdale Elementary parents called for long-term boundary adjustments, and for changes to be made to the short-term plans proposed by the administration on November 27.

“In the district’s current recommendations, many students who live in walking distance to one school are bussed to different schools. But any long-term decision would be based on proximity, so moving kids now who are in walking distance will inevitably lead to them moving back once we make different boundary adjustments,” said Nikki Guerrero, a parent of two current Brookdale Elementary School students.

The group of parents submitted its own proposal to the district for attendance area adjustments to Brookdale Elementary.

They differ from the administration’s plans in that they keep 49 students who live within walking distance to Brookdale at the school – at the expense of leaving the school over capacity for another year.

“The One Brookdale online poll shows that 83 percent are willing to sacrifice overcrowding for one year while a long-term solution can be planned in the coming months,” said Carrie Cole, mother of a Brookdale student.

The board was originally going to vote on the administration’s changes at this latest meeting, but in a statement released on December 8, Board President Michael Raczak announced their decision to postpone that vote until the January 8 board meeting.

At 5 p.m., before the regular meeting starts, the board will hold a workshop to discuss boundary changes. The public is welcome to attend.
