Floating Dock at Benedictine

Four thousand pavers, dozens of new trees, and hundreds of labor-hours: the Naperville Home Depot contributed all of that and more to Lake St. Benedict, all in the name of a good cause.

“It’s called ‘Celebration of Service’ – it’s a seven week period of time where we really focus on getting involved in veteran-related events so we can give back,” said Home Depot District Manager John Girves.

The volunteers wanted to transform the lake at Benedictine University into a tribute area to honor veterans, complete with flag poles, several new benches, and a floating dock.

The crew started at 7:30 a.m. with breakfast and some extra motivation.

From there, the volunteers grabbed their shovels, some bricks, and some heavy machinery and got to work.

By 2:30 that afternoon, the restoration was finished and the lakefront had a new look and a new purpose.

“This is a project that they wanted to do to honor veterans as well as be actively involved in the community and that’s pretty much what we’re about too,” said Benedictine University President Charlie Gregory. “So it was a nice blend of what they wanted to do, what we needed, and it blended in quite well to the local community.”

Turning this lake into a scenic view and a celebration of service.
