Heavy snowflakes didn’t stop hundreds from coming out to Neuqua Valley High School this morning, as they were eager to witness Congresswoman Lauren Underwood’s ceremonial swearing in celebration.
As the 32-year-old reflected on her alma mater, she discussed how her plans to help expand access to healthcare and represent the people of Illinois’ 14th district.
“It was the lessons that I learned in this place and in Naperville here in the 14th district that really gave me the courage to act and to do the right thing. And for me that call came when it was about healthcare,” said Underwood.
Both constituents and public officials were in attendance to show their support for underwood, who’s now the youngest black woman to take a seat in Congress.
“I live in the Illinois 14th so she is actually my representative,” said Naperville resident Kim White. “I’m just really excited to be part of this historic ceremonial swearing in for her.”
“I feel very strongly about healthcare and I am a happily retired teacher, and proud IEA member. And I just couldn’t be more excited! And since I couldn’t get to Washington, this is the next best thing,” said Lake in the Hills resident Ellen Levy.
The ceremony also included a musical performance by Neuqua Valley students and closing remarks by principal Bob McBride.
And the next time you can catch Congresswoman Underwood in the area will be during the Fox Valley Women’s March on January 19.
